Maguire had another difficult night on Monday, making two mistakes as England played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

“I will be honest, it is a tough period at the moment,” Shaw said when asked by BBC Football Daily about his team-mate.

“Of course Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character. He has taken a lot of stick, probably more than I have ever seen before in football but he never hides away, he is always there.

“Look at the Euros and what he has done, people need to understand he is a big part of the England team and they have to accept it,” Shaw added.

The centre-back is fighting to survive at Old Trafford after a difficult season, in which his position as captain and indeed as a United player has come under intense scrutiny.

Maguire faces an uncertain future at the club, with Ten Hag keen on signing a centre-back this summer.

But the Telegraph claim Maguire’s future has not yet been decided and the Dutchman will give him a chance to reverse his fortunes at the club.

Ten Hag feels Maguire could benefit from shifting position in defence to play as a right-sided centre-back.

Maguire is played as a left-sided centre-back in order to showcase his passing skills and the position requires his partner to sweep up from behind.

The 29-year-old Manchester United captain has come under criticism for his club performances this season, with some questioning whether he deserved a place in the England squad for the matches against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.

Asked whether Maguire is still one of the best England players, Southgate replied: “He has got us to a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final so there’s no doubt he’s more than capable of playing at the highest level.

“He was very good for us in the autumn. The club [Manchester United] are in a difficult moment – there could be any number of reasons for that – so that doesn’t mean that players can be poor for a couple of years and then still find their way in, and sometimes it depends on competition for positions.

“We’ve obviously had some forward players out who haven’t been in good form but there’s direct, experienced replacements for those players, so it is a complicated decision.”

Harry Maguire has declared himself fit and available for England’s eagerly-anticipated European Championship clash with Scotland.

The 28-year-old centre-back is an established part of Gareth Southgate’s side, having played a key role in England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

Maguire has been progressing ahead of schedule though, and last week he returned to full training, putting him in contention for Friday’s clash against Scotland.

“I feel good, I’ve been training now,” the centre-back said.

“Obviously the injury was a setback club football wise. Internationally I wanted to come into this with a lot of games under my belt with full fitness, but I feel good. I’m back available, been training and I’m looking forward to it.”
