Raphael Varane apologises to Real Madrid team-mates after two errors. “I wanted to show my face. I got it wrong, this is on me.”
Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has owned up after his two costly errors helped Manchester City advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus secured a 4-2 aggregate victory for Pep Guardiola’s side, however it was the French international who was at fault for both of their goals.
The 27-year-old lost possession to Jesus inside his own area, with the Brazilian squaring home for Sterling to tap in after just eight minutes.
Real Madrid’s talisman Karim Benzema headed home to put Real Madrid behind 3-2 on aggregate but needing just one goal to advance to the next round.
“I wanted to show my face, I got it wrong. This is on me, and we are out,” he told El Chiringuito.
“I am sorry for my teammates. I am sad that we are out. This has not happened many times in my career.”
