Merseyside Police slam Liverpool fans for breaking lockdown rules

Merseyside Police slam Liverpool fans for breaking lockdown rules. Liverpool fans spilled on to the streets around Anfield Thursday night.

Liverpool fans who broke coronavirus lockdown rules by congregating in their thousands outside Anfield on Thursday night have been criticised by Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Rob Carden.

Supporters were overjoyed as Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City. That meant the Reds now have an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League.

While the vast majority celebrated at home, a minority spilled out on to the streets of Liverpool to mark the end of their club’s 30-year wait for top-flight glory.

The partying, which for small hours, would be fine in normal circumstances. That just as was the case when Liverpool won the Champions League last year.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has seen mass gatherings banned in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly COVID-19.

“I would like to congratulate Liverpool FC on deservedly winning the Premier League title. And I would like to thank the thousands of Liverpool fans across Merseyside who celebrated at home. As they have for the previous games played behind closed doors,” Assistant Chief Constable Carden said.

“Unfortunately, as we have seen throughout the lockdown period, not everyone adhered to the regulations in place. Although the vast majority of celebrations were good natured, a large number of people chose to gather outside the stadium.”
