Bruno Fernandes warns Manchester City that title race is not yet over

Bruno Fernandes warns Manchester City that title race is not yet over. He scored an early penalty as Manchester United won 2-0.

Bruno Fernandes has stressed that Manchester United will not give up hope of winning the Premier League title this season.

Fernandes scored a penalty in the second minute, with Luke Shaw also getting on the scoresheet as United won 2-0 away to rivals Manchester City.

City are still eleven points clear at the top with ten games remaining, but Fernandes indicated that United still believe that they can beat City to the title.

Speaking after United ended City’s run of 21 successive wins in all competitions, Fernandes outlined the importance of taking things on a game by game basis, declaring that it is ‘a marathon not a sprint’.

Fernandes told Sky Sports: ‘We all know it’s always difficult to play against them. They are tough to play against but the result is the most important. For now it’s not about winning against City it’s about performing well until the end of the season.

‘Of course scoring in the first minute is perfect because we have more space to counter, but against Tottenham we started with a penalty and we lost. But we remained focused until the end of the game and we defended well. We know we have players who can score. We know everyone can do something for us.

‘Maybe we performed better against other big teams and didn’t win the games. Maybe against Liverpool we had more chances, but it’s performing against everyone. The league is not a sprint. It’s a marathon, there’s a lot of games to go ahead and we have to do our best.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plays down talk of Premier League title race revival

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plays down talk of Premier League title race revival. Manchester United ended Manchester City’s 21-match winning run.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has downplayed suggestions his side have reignited the Premier League title race after ending Manchester City’s 21-match winning run with a stunning 2-0 derby victory.

Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw struck early in each half at the Etihad Stadium as United inflicted a first defeat on their rivals since November.

Solskjaer stopped short of claiming the victory will act as a springboard to catch City in the title race this season, telling Sky Sports: “We just take one game at a time; City are too far ahead for us to think we can catch them. Last year we caught 15 points up on Leicester, but City are a different proposition.

“Even today they put us under so much pressure you could see we were playing against a very good team. When you come away with a 2-0 win and another clean sheet and a performance like this then you are delighted.”

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will not sacrifice Premier League

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will not sacrifice Premier League. Liverpool fell out of the Premier League top six.

Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool will never give up on the Premier League even if the Champions League offers them a better option to extend their run in Europe’s top club competition.

A haul of just 12 points from the last 39 available has seen Liverpool’s title defence end with barely a whimper and has left Klopp’s side fighting for a top-four finish.

Klopp says he will not allow Europe to take their focus off the continued fight on the domestic front.

“We play Fulham and three days later we play Leipzig and we are not in the next round,” he said.

“I can’t think about winning the Champions League now as we have to go through this difficult round.

“This week we play these three games, late in the season, with two days in between, Thursday, Sunday and Wednesday, and it is tough.

“We see who we can field on Sunday and then who can play on Wednesday but it is not that we gave up on the Premier League, that will never happen.

“There is no game we can play and lose and people say, ‘Ah… look at the line-up’.

“Liverpool is too big, too many people are interested. We don’t play behind closed doors really without cameras, it is in front of our people and we feel the responsibility that in each game we have to give our absolute everything to win it.

“If that doesn’t happen then people will think, ‘That’s not enough’. We don’t change our attitude.”

Bruno Fernandes ready to play lead role for Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes ready to play lead role for Manchester United. He has been Man Utd’s talisman since he arrived.

Bruno Fernandes has brushed off suggestions he is a flat-track bully as the Manchester United midfielder looks to inspire his team to victory on derby day this weekend.

United travel to Premier League leaders Manchester City on Sunday and know even a victory would only take them to within 11 points of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Fernandes told Soccer Saturday: “I don’t know what people mean by ‘top six’, because the teams are in top six in the table. I score and assist against some of them. I score this season against Tottenham. But some people say penalties don’t count!

“I know people expect Bruno to score or assist in every game because when I arrived, I was playing really well. If you see my stats, everyone is thinking that Bruno has to score in every game, Bruno has to assist in every game.

“I’m sure in some moments, I will score, I will assist, and I will perform. And that will help my team-mates to win the game.”

Manchester United to pay Sporting if Bruno Fernandes wins PFA award

Manchester United to pay Sporting if Bruno Fernandes wins PFA award. He has scored 15 goals alongside 10 assists in the Premier League.

Bruno Fernandes has made opposition defences pay since moving to the Premier League and now he will cost Manchester United an extra £4.2million if he is crowned this year’s Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year.

The Portuguese playmaker is the bookies’ favourite for the award after a fine season at Old Trafford.

And according to the Times, United will have to pay Sporting Lisbon an additional £4.2m as part of their deal when they initially signed the 26-year-old in January 2020.

Fernandes joined the Red Devils for an initial £46.6m from the Portuguese club, which could rise to £67.8m if all his performance clauses are met.

Wolves will listen to offers for out-of-form Adama Traore

Wolves will listen to offers for out-of-form Adama Traore. The Spain international is yet to score in 26 Premier League matches this season.

Wolves will listen to offers for Adama Traore at the end of the season but will probably have to accept a lower fee for the winger than they would have received last summer.

Traore, 25, was on the market last August after Wolves’ marathon campaign finally ended with a Europa League defeat by Sevilla and there was interest from former club Barcelona as well as Manchester City, but Wolves’ £70million asking price was deemed too high.

Sportsmail understands that Wolves are likely to sell at least one key player this summer as they reshape their squad under boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Wolves sold Diogo Jota to Liverpool for up to £45m and would be looking for a similar sum for Traore, who hopes to be in Spain’s squad for Euro 2020.
