Why are Real Madrid not playing at the Santiago Bernabéu?

Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and co will be aiming to win LaLiga over the coming weeks. But they will be playing their home games in newish surroundings.

Of the 11 remaining games, six of them will be at home, but none at their famous ground to the north of the Spanish capital. Instead they will all be played at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano. The stadium is located within the club’s Valdebebas training complex, north of Madrid.

This ground is normally host to games of Castilla, Real Madrid’s youth team.

The dimensions of the pitch are the same as those of the club’s more illustrious stadium. But some people have suggested that the lack of fans -all LaLiga games for the time behind closed doors – may be less impactful at the smaller venue (capacity 6,000).

Why Madrid move away from the Bernabéu?

The Santiago Bernabéu is getting a massive upgrade. Following much planning, work got underway earlier this campaign and the target date for completion is ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium may only have seating for 6,000 spectators but it has all of the latest technology, with VAR now completely installed.

First team squad sources say that it has, “dressing rooms, warm-up areas, recovery zones and training facilities which are better and more comfortable than a lot of those found at top flight clubs.”

Mallorca 0-4 Barcelona: Match Analysis as La Liga return

Mallorca 0-4 Barcelona: Match Analysis
Mallorca 0-4 Barcelona: Match Analysis

Mallorca 0-4 Barcelona: Match Analysis as La Liga return. In an impressive night of football, Barcelona smashed Mallorca 0-4 at the Visit Mallorca Estadi.

The Blaugrana extended their lead at the top of La Liga with a supremely comfortable 0-4 win on the road, which is not something they’ve been able to do much at all this season.

Four goals from four different scorers gave Barcelona the win, but what did we learn?

Braithwaite’s simplicity is genius

When Barcelona signed Martin Braithwaite, eyebrows were raised and not just because they signed him outside the transfer window.

Obviously, the Dane came in as an emergency signing following Ousmane Dembélé’s season-ending injury, but given his lowly reputation people viewed it as more of a panic signing, a joke of a transfer on par with Julien Faubert joining Real Madrid.

Today he proved emphatically why he is an almost perfect signing for Barcelona. Sure, Braithwaite is not world-class nor even close, but he is a player who possesses great pace and tactical intelligence and most importantly: a willingness to run off the ball.

All Braithwaite did against Mallorca was lurk off the ball and make runs into space. He often didn’t get the ball, but he repeatedly opened up space for team-mates with his movement.

He was so good at moving off the ball that on 37 minutes he found himself in space right into the middle of the box when Messi deftly headed the ball his way.

And when the ball fell to him, in classic Braithwaite fashion, didn’t overcomplicate things. The Dane just focused and hit it high and hard into the roof of the net to double the Blaugrana’s lead.

It was a supreme goal, and his movement was on display again around the hour when he made a nice short run in behind to meet a Messi pass and almost scored but for an amazing save from Manolo Reina. All night long he ran and ran, constantly giving Barcelona a vertical threat.

Martin Braithwaite isn’t the striker that Barcelona wanted, but he is absolutely the striker that Barcelona needed.

Antoine Griezmann still doesn’t get it

Standing in contrast to Martin Braithwaite, who already looks absurdly comfortable in a Barcelona shirt, Antoine Griezmann spends most of his game time looking like a hard-working youth teamer who isn’t quite up to it quality-wise but keeps getting picked because he works hard.

It’s bizarre to watch a player of such immense quality and intelligence so consistently fail to “get it” when tactical understanding has always been one of his strengths.

But even the extended training and “second pre-season” afforded the players because of the global pandemic hasn’t helped.

Quique Setién’s in the groove

Part of the problem Quique Setién faced at Barcelona was that he didn’t have enough training time to properly implement his ideas.

Well, the lockdown-imposed hiatus granted him that, and it’s shown here with a dominant win away from home where Barcelona absorbed several waves of Mallorca pressure and never wilted.

They continued to play their game and found unique ways to score.

The Spaniard even had a command of his squad that showed a coach who is more comfortable. He didn’t rush Luis Suárez back, but had no problem hooking an underperforming Arturo Vidal at half-time (despite his goal) and even pulling Antoine Griezmann before the hour.

He made fantastic use of his squad to rest as many starters as he could whilst always keeping Barcelona viable as a threat in attack.

This was just the second time this season that Barcelona had scored more than twice away from home and the first time they bagged four goals. It was also their first away clean sheet of 2020.

For both of those things to come in one game, and for Messi to score and bag two assists whilst looking impossibly better than everyone else, and for Barcelona to go five points clear atop La Liga… it’s clear Quique Setién is in the groove.

Dortmund rubbish Jadon Sancho to Liverpool rumours

Dortmund rubbish Jadon Sancho to Liverpool rumours. Sebastian Kehl, the head of Borussia Dortmund’s licensed player division, has no time for rumours that see Sancho leaving the club this year.

Sancho to Liverpool, blared the transfer market rumour mills. But, according to club official Sebastian Kehl, the player is not expected to leave Borussia Dortmund in the close season, pouring cold water on claims the youngster was returning to England.

Despite reported interest from elsewhere, Kehl, who heads up Dortmund’s licensed player division, does not envision Sancho departing Signal Iduna Park this year.

“We expect Jadon to play with us next season,” he told Sky.

Asked about reports that Liverpool were leading the race to sign him, he added: “That is not the truth.”

Achraf Hakimi has been another standout performer for BVB this season but his loan from Real Madrid is due to end at the conclusion of the campaign.

Dortmund are hopeful of extending his stay but Kehl suggested it will be some time until there is a potential agreement.

He said: “It’s in his contract that he will return to Real Madrid at the end of the season if they want him. We have to be patient.”

Barca are willing to help pay Philippe Coutinho wages

Barca are willing to help pay Philippe Coutinho wages

Barca are willing to help pay Philippe Coutinho wages at his next club to move him on this summer, report The Telegraph.

The Brazilian is said to earn over £200k per week at the Camp Nou and whilst clubs are interested in his signature, they may need help from the Catalan club to pay his salary.

Earlier in the week, Diario Sport reported both Tottenham and Chelsea were holding talks for the player and evaluating the possibility of including anyone in a player-exchange deal for Coutinho this summer.

Separately, Diario Sport cited reports from England and France that Newcastle were in negotiations for the player but the Catalan outlet believes London is a more likely destination.

Bayern Munich – where Coutinho is on a season-long loan arrangement from Barcelona – have an option to buy the Brazil international for €120m at the end of the campaign but multiple reports suggest this will not be exercised.

Barcelona are said to be keen on selling the former Liverpool star this year to raise vital funds, while the player is said to have little interest in returning to Inter or joining Paris Saint-Germain and instead is keen on a move to England.

Rakitic insists he will stay as he sends another message to Barcelona. Ivan Rakitic has reiterated once again that his plan is to remain at Barcelona until his contract expires in 2021, as he has said on several occasions.

The Croatian has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou and Barça have looked to move him on but he sent the club a powerful message, asking for “clarity” in the talks.

“I don’t want to look too far ahead.” he told Sport1. “The people at the club know that Barça is the perfect club for me. I always sign a contract to fulfill it. I still want that.”

“I am not angry with anyone, I still have a great relationship with everyone at the club and I am incredibly grateful for the time I have spent at Barça.”

“I know how the business of football works and that we are players and that the bosses want the best for the club. But I have the right to decide for myself the direction I want to go. I wanted to make that clear again.”

La Liga president threatens quarentine after players breaches

La Liga president threatens quarentine
La Liga president threatens quarentine

La Liga president threatens quarentin. Javier Tebas has warned clubs and players that the league will introducing quarantines if social distancing rules continue to be breached.

Nelson Semedo returned to Barcelona training on Friday after testing negative for coronavirus having breached social distancing rules, with Diario AS citing Catalan radio station RAC1 as reporting the negative test despite he attended a birthday dinner on Monday with more than 20 people involved.

The Portugal international is the latest player to breach guidelines after four Sevilla teammates were among a large group of people to meet up, with Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic also accused of flouting the rules.

“If this continues, we could be obliged to look at something we weren’t going to do, which is quarantining,” Tebas told international media via a conference call on Thursday, as cited by ESPN.

“We had planned for an obligatory quarantine the week before the season began. But if this is going to become more normal — three players from one club, one from another — then we will be left with no choice.”

“If they aren’t complying with the rules with the due diligence of a footballer, then we would have to take a step back and demand they quarantine. If so many parties and so many barbecues continue…”
