Roy Keane reveals worry over Manchester United summer signing Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen is a ‘very good’ player but won’t fix Manchester United’s problems in midfield, according to former Old Trafford captain Roy Keane.

Eriksen made his United debut in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton, having joined the club on a free transfer earlier in the summer.

The former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford star has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford.

Keane is an admirer of ‘really talented’ Eriksen but insists the Denmark international won’t get United back to challenging for major trophies.

Keane was asked about United’s move for Eriksen before their Premier League opener and told Sky Sports: ‘Look, I think he’s a really good player.

‘In the bigger picture, will he get Manchester United back competing for league titles? The answer is no.

‘My biggest worry for players like Eriksen, the big problem for United over the last few years when they’re out of possession, especially against the better teams, they’re not great at getting back.

‘That’s not one of his strengths. He’s a really talented player, a very good player obviously, but I’m not convinced he’s the answer.’

Liverpool suffer injury blow as Thiago Alcantara ruled out for six weeks

Spanish international Thiago Alcantara was withdrawn during Liverpool’s 2-2 opening-day Premier League draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage due to injury. The medical report hasn’t yet been issued but it’s understood he’ll miss the next six weeks of action.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo. Thiago has injured his hamstring muscle and is expected to miss the next six matchdays for Jurgen Klopp’s side – that’s inclusive of clashes with Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Thiago, who’s earned 46 caps for La Roja and scored two goals for his country, will be frustrated by this latest injury blow as it’s going to harm his chances of making Luis Enrique’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup in Qatar. That kicks off in November.

Because the Spaniard of Brazilian parentage had been in fine form – since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2020 from Bayern Munich he’s made 71 appearances for the English club, helping them win their first league title in 30 years in his second season.

Arsenal hold talks with AC Milan over Sandro Tonali transfer deal

Arsenal have reportedly met with AC Milan for talks over the potential transfer of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The highly-rated 22-year-old has long been regarded as one of the biggest prospects in Serie A, and it seems Milan are not too keen to let him go.

Still, a report from Calciomercato suggests Arsenal have had some discussions over the possibility of a deal, and Milan could be ready to let the player go if they receive an offer in the region of €55million.

The Gunners could do with strengthening in midfield before the end of the summer, as it remains one area of their squad that has been a little neglected.

Tonali would surely be an upgrade on Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny, and €55m seems a decent fee to pay for someone who could end up being a fine long-term investment.

Arsenal have brought in Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko as among their most high-profile signings this summer, but it seems they could still have more plans in the final weeks of the window.

Sky Sports News revealed last week that United had a bid of £7.6m rejected for the former West Ham and Stoke City forward.

United were expected to go back in with an improved offer, but have decided to move on to other targets.

Bologna’s asking price for the forward was believed to be more than what United were prepared to pay.

Bologna sporting director Marco Di Vaio looked to close the door on United’s attempts to sign Arnautovic, claiming the forward is “priceless”.

The 27-year-old has emerged as a shock target for the Red Devils following their failure to get a deal for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong over the line.

The France international is out of favour in Turin and he’s available, given he has just 12 months left on his contract with the Old Lady.

Though United haven’t given up hope of signing De Jong, they are wary of ending the window without reinforcements in midfield.

And the Manchester Evening News say a deal has now been agreed with Juventus to sign the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

However, the player is yet to agree peronal terms over a move to the Theatre of Dreams and the report says his mother – who is Rabiot’s agent – is a ‘stumbling block’ to the deal.

Rabiot will likely seek an increase on his Juventus salary to join United, as he’s wary that this will be his final big contract.

United have long tracked Rabiot and hoped to do a deal for the Frenchman in 2019, only to see a failure to qualify for the Champions League scupper their chances.

Rabiot’s stock has fallen since, though his performances for Juventus last season were improved.

Veronique, Rabiot’s mother, is renowned for her fiery nature and once confronted Laurent Blanc in the car-park of Paris Saint-Germain’s stadium to question his decisions.

According to Sky in Germany, a fee of £25.3m (€30m) plus bonuses has been agreed, with Werner expected to arrive in Germany this week.

Werner was set to return to RB Leipzig on a season-long loan with an option to buy, but talks between the two clubs moved quickly, and an agreement has now been reached for the permanent transfer of the Germany international.

Chelsea signed Werner two years ago from Leipzig, but he was been unable to replicate the goal-scoring form which prompted the Blues to activate his £45m release clause.

Manchester United make enquiry for Leroy Sane transfer deal

Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a possible move for former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

Erik ten Hag is desperate to add to his forward line but the club have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Ajax winger Antony, with the Dutch giants demanding £80m for the Brazilian.

The Red Devils maintain that Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale, despite the 37-year-old’s plea to leave the club. But regardless of Ronaldo’s situation, Ten Hag wants to strengthen United’s frontline and injury to Anthony Martial ahead of Sunday’s opener against Brighton only underlines the lack of depth at Old Trafford.

With a move for Antony seemingly off the cards, Ten Hag has switched his attention and the Mirror claim United have made an enquiry for Germany winger Sane. The midfielder swapped Manchester for Munich two years ago after refusing to sign a new deal at rivals City.

Pep Guardiola’s side received around £44m for Sane, who was entering the final year of his deal at the Etihad. But it’s been far from plain sailing for Sane back in his homeland, with the winger starting just 22 Bundesliga matches last term.

The winger was already up against the likes of Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman in the competition for minutes but the arrival of Sadio Mane threatens to reduce his playing time even further.

It’s unclear whether Sane would be open to a return to the Premier League or if he’d consider a move to City’s rivals.

He follows the arrivals of Raheem Sterling from Man City (£47.5m), Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli (£33m), Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire (£12m) and Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa (£20m) for a total expenditure of £172m so far.

Sergio Aguero claims Arsenal are dark horses for the Premier League title

Sergio Aguero has claimed that Arsenal are dark horses for the Premier League title this season, while he expects Liverpool and former side Manchester City to battle it out once again.

The Gunners dramatically missed out on a spot in the Champions League last term, but expectations are high ahead of their opening day clash with Crystal Palace on Friday.

The north London side have made some impressive additions this summer, including Aguero’s former City team-mate Gabriel Jesus for £45million, while they also won all of their matches in pre season.

Speaking to Stake.com, Stake ambassador Aguero said: ‘My candidates are Manchester City, which I think can repeat, Liverpool, Chelsea and I add Arsenal, which has strengthened very well and has had great games in the pre-season.

‘Everything will be very even, as it has been happening, but we will have to be attentive to Arsenal’s performance, which has put together a great project with the help of Arteta and I think that this year they will give people something to talk about.’
