The 37-year-old has not reported back to training at Carrington, citing family reasons, which the club have accepted.

Ronaldo’s absence comes amid informing United he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer if a suitable offer arrives.

Ronaldo was due to re-join his team-mates on Monday, but has instead been keeping fit at Portugal’s training base – Cidade do Futebol – for the past few days.

Sky Sports News has been told Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has spent the past few weeks selling the ‘Cristiano effect’ to clubs having compiled a dossier of his client’s immense sponsorship, social media and ‘new markets’ influence.

The 37-year-old stunned United last week when he told the club he wishes to leave if they receive a suitable offer for him this summer amid his concerns that the Red Devils are not moving forward quickly enough.

The Portuguese forward still ‘has an affinity for the club’ but at this stage of his career, he wants to be playing in the Champions League and does not see that happening at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo did not report for training on Monday due to family reasons but Sportsmail reported on Sunday that he will hold talks with Erik ten Hag upon his return as he looks to resolve his future.

United insist he is not for sale and have underlined that he is under contract for another year, although new boss Ten Hag is indifferent to whether he stays, hopeful that his departure would help fund other transfers.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, has been talking to clubs such as Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Napoli over recent weeks to test whether there is a market for his client but no agreement is in place as it stands.

The Bianconeri have been in talks with Chelsea regarding the 22-year-old Dutch centre back for a number of weeks now, making it clear that a deal wouldn’t come cheap. The funds generated by the sale of De Ligt would be immediately reinvested into the squad, so a decisive offer is needed.

As reported by Sky Sports Germany, Bayern have been in contact with Juventus to discuss a move for De Ligt and things have started positively. The Dutch defender has already spoken with Julian Nagelsmann and sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić and he was left feeling very impressed.

As was made clear with Chelsea, De Ligt won’t come cheap; reports suggest that the 22-year-old would cost around €60-80m, but the release clause in his contract is over €100m, so Juventus could play tough in negotiations.

United will now finalise a three-year contract for the 30-year-old, who spent the second half of last season at Brentford.

Once that is done, Eriksen will have a medical before completing the move.

The Denmark international was mulling over offers from United and Brentford, but has decided to join up with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Eriksen worked with Ten Hag when he trained with Ajax as part of his return to football following his cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

The new ownership at Chelsea are said to be intrigued by the idea and Thomas Tuchel likes the 37-year-old. It’s so far unclear, however, as to whether Tuchel would approve the deal. Cristiano is still a lethal goalscorer but he needs to be accommodated.

He returned to Old Trafford last summer after over a decade away in Spain with Real Madrid and in Italy with Juventus. But things haven’t panned out as planned – Cristiano scored 24 goals across all competitions in 2021/22 but United finished just sixth in the Premier League, qualifying for the Europa League rather than the Champions League. Cristiano is said to be obsessed with winning a sixth European Cup.

The Portuguese forward has informed the club he wants to leave this summer in order to play Champions League football.

It’s understood that his absence from training on Monday was due to family reasons, with United accepting this explanation.

United’s position on Ronaldo remains that he has a year remaining on his contract and is not for sale, despite his desire to quit Old Trafford.

Some United players – namely those not involved in international football last month – began their pre-season schedule under Ten Hag last week, but Monday morning saw the rest of the squad, bar Ronaldo, arrive.

Raphinha would rather stay at Leeds and wait for Barcelona rather

Chelsea may be forced to abandon their interest in Raphinha with the Brazil international prepared to wait at least another six months to complete his dream move to Barcelona.

Arsenal appeared to be in pole position to land the 25-year-old earlier this week but the Gunners failed to come anywhere close to matching Leeds’ valuation.

Chelsea looked set to capitalise on the indicision of their London rivals and moved quickly to agree a £60m fee, before attempting to agree personal terms with the Brazil international.

Raphinha, however, has made no secret of his desire to join Barcelona and reports on Friday claimed he had told his agent, Deco, to inform Chelsea he had little desire to move to Stamford Bridge.

EPSN now claim, Raphinha would even prefer to remain at Elland Road in the short term and hope that Barcelona’s financial situation resolves itself once the winter window opens.

Barcelona submitted their opening bid on Thursday but were unable to match Chelsea’s offer, only able to come up with €50m plus €10m in add-ons.

Chelsea are now pressuring Raphinha and Deco, their former player, for a final answer before they turn their attentions to alternative target.

The 37-year-old feels the urge to win even more in the twilight of his career, but is understood to feel that may not be possible at Old Trafford next season. The 2021/22 campaign was the fifth in succession in which United failed to win a trophy.

Ronaldo is also understood to be concerned that United are yet to make any improvements to the squad in the current transfer window. Thirteen players have left the club this summer but none have yet arrived.

Ronaldo respects United a lot – especially the fans – and is said to be “in love” with the club, but this coming season will be the first in his career in which he will not play Champions League football if he stays at Old Trafford.

The Portugal international has never played in the Europa League – which United will be in next season – and last played in its predecessor, the UEFA Cup when he was at Sporting Lisbon in the 2002/03 season.
