Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa and faces a race to be fit in time for Saturday’s Premier League encounter at home to Manchester City.

Mendy was absent for Sunday’s 3-0 win over Tottenham due to a knock he sustained last week against Zenit St Petersburg.

Tuchel said: “We’ll try and do everything for Saturday and to reintegrate him tomorrow in individual training and hopefully Thursday for team training. But not yet.

“I think it’s possible [against Man City] but it’s a race against pain and time, so let’s see. If team training goes well he can be ready for Saturday, but I don’t know right now.”

Lionel Messi will miss Paris Saint Germain’s visit to Metz in Ligue 1 on Wednesday because of an injury to his left knee.

Messi, who was substituted on his home debut against Lyon on Sunday, underwent an MRI scan which confirmed signs of bruising to the bone.

The French league leaders confirmed on Tuesday the forward will undergo a follow-up examination in 48 hours.

Messi, 34, has not scored in his first three appearances since he joined on a free transfer in August following his departure from Barcelona.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are due to play against Montpellier at home in the league on Saturday before hosting Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.

It’s a question of time, money and finding the right replacement: Ronaldo Koeman’s days as Barcelona head coach are numbered.

It’s a case of when he goes, not if. Following Monday’s disappointing home draw with Granada in LaLiga, Koeman’s standing in the eyes of club president Joan Laporta is no longer salvageable.

For the moment, the Dutchman will remain in charge of Barça and is expected to take charge of the Blaugrana’s upcoming games against Cádiz, Levante, Benfica and possibly even Atlético Madrid.

However, his prospects of remaining in the Camp Nou dugout beyond the October international break look bleak.

However, it’s not easy to make such an appointment with the season underway. Laporta is an admirer of Roberto Martínez, but the Belgium boss doesn’t appear willing to leave his position now, with the Red Devils just about to play the UEFA Nations League finals in October.

However, he could arrive after the international break.

In addition to Martínez, a host of other names are being linked with the Barça job, including former Germany boss Joachim Löw and ex-Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte. The Italian’s likely financial demands appear to make him an unfeasible option.

Riccardo Montolivo says Sandro Tonali has matured this season. The 21-year-old joined on a permanent deal from Brescia this summer.

Former Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo said Sandro Tonali ‘has more awareness’ after one year at San Siro. ‘Now he’s more than just an alternative’.

Montolivo spent seven years with Milan from 2012 to 2019, having enjoyed stints with Atalanta and Fiorentina prior to joining the Rossoneri.

The 36-year-old retired in July 2019 but is working with DAZN as a pundit and spoke about Tonali’s performance after the 1-1 draw with Juventus on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who joined on a permanent deal from Brescia this summer, spent last season on loan at Milanello and was initially struggling to adapt to the level in the top of Serie A.

This year, however, the young midfielder made his Champions League debut against Liverpool and has played all four games in the League, scoring against Cagaliri and assisting Ante Rebic against Juventus last night.

Montolivo compared Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli and Tonali after the battle between the two midfielders.

“I think Tonali is maturing,” Montolivo told DAZN. “He has more awareness than last season. Today, he’s more than just an alternative.

“Locatelli is two years older than Tonali, he has already imposed himself in Serie A and the national team.

“Manuel might have something more in terms of vision, smoother passing, but Tonali will get there. He has grown a lot physically. Both are destined to wear the Azzurri shirt.”
