Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to remain in charge as Manchester United manager despite their heavy defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

The feeling within the club is that while the result was bitterly disappointing and painful for everyone, the immediate focus is on improving after picking up one point from their last four Premier League games.

United’s next two Premier League matches are against Tottenham and Manchester City and they also face Atalanta in the Champions League next week.

But despite their poor results and huge external speculation, there is no suggestion from inside the club that Solskjaer’s job is under threat at this point.

Sky in Italy is reporting that former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has been in contact with United about taking over should they decide to make a change.

However, Sky Sports News understands that there has been no contact between the parties.

Manchester United considering sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United are considering sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager.

The Manchester Evening News understands the club hierarchy is giving serious consideration to dismissing Solskjaer before United’s next game at Tottenham on Saturday. United have failed to respond for comment on the manager’s position.

United players are understood to have been kept inside Old Trafford for two hours after the final whistle of the 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool on Sunday.

United have suffered five defeats in their last nine games and are without a win in their last four Premier League matches. Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool was United’s worst ever home defeat to their biggest rivals.

It is understood United players are on a day off ahead of preparations for the Spurs fixture. United have a rare free midweek due to their elimination from the League Cup by West Ham last month.

United rewarded Solskjaer for presiding over ‘clear progress’ last season with a new three-year contract in July but their form has plummeted this term amid the expectation of a title challenge.

Liverpool did not need to reach anywhere near their peak performance but their 5-0 dismantling of Manchester United marked a significant day in the Premier League title race, according to Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

United were totally humiliated and Liverpool did everything that was asked of them, picking apart their opponents with precision to secure the biggest win over their arch rivals at Old Trafford.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “No I can’t. I’m not trying to be clever here but I don’t think Liverpool were at their absolute best in terms of actual possession.

“Certainly throughout that first half, they gave Manchester United opportunities by losing the ball but whenever they made passes and got in and around United’s back four… that’s just a joke of a back four, the way it is playing.

“Manchester United and Liverpool are the biggest rivals perhaps in world football, two huge clubs in the North-west of England and I’ve a huge respect for what both clubs have achieved, but you’re not going to get that opportunity too often.

“This is a special Liverpool team with a special manager. The three teams at the top of the Premier League alongside Bayern Munich are the four best teams in Europe. We’ve got real quality in the Premier League.”
