Roberto Carlos opens up on coming very close to joining Chelsea in 2007. The deal fell through at the final hurdle and he joined Fenerbahce.

Roberto Carlos has opened up on coming ‘very close’ to joining Chelsea in 2007 before the deal fell through in the last moment.

The legendary full back spent 11 years at Real Madrid, winning 13 trophies in his 527 appearances for Los Blancos and the Brazilian had many admirers upon his departure from the club in 2007.

At 34, Carlos still had a good few seasons left in him, and the defender has revealed that he was on the verge of joining Jose Mourinho’s at Stamford Bridge before the deal collapsed.

‘I had two proposals, Fenerbahce and Chelsea. Chelsea didn’t work out so I signed for Fenerbahce,’ Carlos told Goal. ‘But, with Chelsea, it got very close. It was literally agreed and I just had to go there and sign the contract.

‘It was just a week before I signed for Fenerbahce and I had been to Paris to meet both Roman Abramovich and Peter Kenyon.

‘Unfortunately, in the final moments something didn’t work out just before finalising, which happens a lot in football. There was an issue with the lawyer.

‘It was all agreed, though, and I am 100 per cent sure I would have done well in the Premier League and it would have suited my characteristics.’

Edinson Cavani facing FA probe after sparking racism storm

Edinson Cavani facing FA probe after sparking racism storm. He referred to a friend as ‘negrito’ in a message.

Edinson Cavani is facing an FA probe after sparking a race storm following Manchester United’s dramatic victory at Southampton.

Cavani scored two goals, including a stoppage-time winner, to inspire United side to victory after coming off the bench at half-time.

But his heroics at St Mary’s were overshadowed when he posted a Spanish term with racial connotations on social media.

In response to a message of congratulations, seemingly from a friend, Cavani said: ‘Gracias negrito.’ The term, which makes reference to race, translates directly as ‘Thanks black’.

Three hours after posting the tweet, it was deleted. Cavani insists ‘negrito’ is a term of affection in South America and that will be his defence is any disciplinary action is taken.

The FA are aware of Cavani’s post and looking into it. And the incident quickly led to comparisons being drawn between Cavani and his fellow Uruguayan Suarez.

Cavani’s countryman, then Liverpool striker Suarez, was banned for eight games and fined £40,000 for using the word ‘negro’ after clashing with United defender Patrice Evra in 2011.

Suarez attempted to argue in his FA hearing that the word in Uruguay and other parts of Latin America is inoffensive in certain situations.

Lionel Messi's homage to Diego Maradona will cost Barcelona €3,000

Lionel Messi’s homage to Diego Maradona will cost Barcelona €3,000. The celebration forced referee Mateu Lahoz to book the forward.

One of the great moments of Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Osasuna came when Lionel Messi dedicated his goal to Diego Maradona, who passed away this week.

Messi peeled off his Barça shirt to reveal a Newell’s Old Boy shirt — the one wore by Maradona when he played for the Rosario club briefly — and pointed to the sky.

The celebration forced referee Mateu Lahoz to book the Barça forward for removing his shirt, in line with the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s lawbook.

In addition to the booking, the caution for the celebration comes with a €3,000 fine. It’s not a rule which is exclusive to the Spanish league and is also applied by FIFA.

Diego Maradona: doctor under investigation for the death. He operated Maradona’s brain only a few days before his death.

Diego Maradona’s Doctor Leopoldo Luque is under investigation for the death of the Napoli legend. His house was searched by police but he defends himself: ‘My only fault is to have loved him.’

Maradona died at 60 last week, after a cardiac arrest. His doctor Leopoldo Luque is now under investigation and his house was searched for two hours on Sunday.

About 30 policemen entered his property in the morning while he was having breakfast with his daughters, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Luque operated Maradona’s brain only a few days before his death and is now accused of manslaughter.

“I did everything I could do save a friend, he was like a father to me but he had decided to let himself go,” Luque told journalists in tears, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“So many times he would send me away like a rebel father and the following day he would always call me: ‘Luque, I am feeling well, fu…off. Go away.’

“It happened so many times because we had a different relationship.

“One day I didn’t want to leave his room, he told me he would get up and punch me. I told me he’d need to stand up first and then catch me. I got a little distracted and he jumped on me. But I had reached my target because he got up from his bed.

“The following day. I went to remove stitches from his head, and there, with a smile, he told me: ‘You’re afraid, eh?’. He was on the couch and closed his eyes, pretending to be asleep.”

There is also a document where Maradona’s psychologist officially requested an ambulance outside his home and other specialists always available, including a neurologist.

Serie A: AC Milan extend lead at the top of the table to five points. While Napoli beat Roma 4-0 on poignant evening.

Milan extended their lead at the top of the table to five points by comfortably pushing Fiorentina aside with Alessio Romagnoli and a Franck Kessie penalty, even if Bartlomiej Dragowski parried another spot-kick.

Napoli, playing in Argentina-style shirts as a tribute to Maradona, beat Roma 4-0 in Serie A.

Lorenzo Insigne put Napoli ahead with a sublime free-kick in the 30th minute and celebrated by running halfway across the pitch to collect and kiss a shirt with Maradona’s name on it.

Fabian Ruiz, Dries Mertens and Matteo Politano added three more goals in the second half to hand Roma their first defeat of the season in all competitions. Their only other loss was a forfeit for fielding an ineligible player against Verona.

As with all other Serie A matches, the game was preceded by a minute’s silence for Maradona, who enjoyed seven remarkable seasons at Napoli, and the game stopped in the 10th minute for a round of applause.

Napoli, who wore a special kit of light blue-and-white-striped shirts reminiscent of Argentina’s strip, moved to fifth with 17 points, ahead of Roma on goal difference.

Lionel Messi pays tribute to Diego Maradona as Barcelona beat Osasuna. He revealed a Newell’s Old Boys shirt and raised his arms to the sky.

Lionel Messi paid a personal tribute to Diego Maradona after sealing Barcelona’s 4-0 victory over Osasuna with a vintage solo strike at the Camp Nou.

Messi adorned a brilliant team display with a thumping strike into the top corner in the second half, after Martin Braithwaite had broken the deadlock and Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho had scored either side of half-time.

The Argentine then lifted his shirt to reveal a red and black replica kit of his hometown club Newell’s Old Boys bearing the number 10 which Maradona wore during his brief spell at the Rosario side in 1993.

The Catalans had paid homage before kickoff to the late Maradona, who played for the club in an eventful yet disappointing spell from 1982 to 1984, hanging a framed signed shirt of his above the presidential box while the players held a minute’s silence in front of an old Barca shirt bearing the number 10.

Barca defender Clement Lenglet limped off with an ankle problem, leaving his side with no fit first-team centre backs due to injuries to Samuel Umtiti, Ronald Araujo and Gerard Pique.

The win followed Barca’s 1-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid last week and lifted them to seventh in the standings on 14 points after nine matches, nine behind leaders Real Sociedad and second-placed Atletico.
