Lega Serie A President says start of 2020-21 season could be pushed back

Lega Serie A President says start of 2020-21 season could be pushed back. “We are trying to earn a little more time and let the teams have more rest.”

Paolo Dal Pino has revealed that the start of the 2020-21 season could be pushed back ‘to let the teams have some more rest’. He said the Lega has scheduled a meeting on Monday to establish the exact dates for 2020-21, with the current plan to start on September 12.

Il Corriere dello Sport reveals that the assembly met at Hilton in Milan today and the Lega chief showed concerns regarding the protocol ahead of the upcoming season.

“Thinking about the next few months. We are worried about uncertainty and the many things to deal with,” he told the newspaper.

“Starting with the current health protocol. It will be very difficult to face an entire championship with a swab test every four days.

“We need to define new applicable and viable methods.”

On the start date of the next championship, Dal Pino added: “On Monday, we have a meeting regarding the calendar. And we will establish the exact dates.

“At the moment, we are talking about September 12. But we are trying to earn a little more time and let the teams have more rest.

“The hypothesis to postpone the season exists, then we’ll see by how much.”

Reports in Italy claim the season could be pushed until September 19 and make up for the lost time by recovering the matches on January 2 and 3.

Marco Reus is ruled out for an indefinite period after groin injury. He missed a large chunk of the recent campaign and will miss pre-season.

Borussia Dortmund have been dealt a major blow after confirming captain Marco Reus will be sidelined for an indefinite period after failing to recover from a groin injury.

Germany international Reus has missed most of the year already after suffering the set-back in February. But his comeback has now been delayed after a flare-up as the club return for pre-season training on Thursday.

Reus has endured an injury-hit career and further issues this season saw him start just 18 times in the 2019-20 Bundesliga season.

In a statement, his club admitted the German forward faces ‘an indefinite period’ on the sidelines due to tendon inflammation in his groin.

‘Borussia Dortmund will still have to be without Marco Reus. The captain has problems with tendon inflammation at the same injured groin muscle. He will be out for an indefinite period.

‘Reus has worked intensively in recent months and has taken steps forward. But he still has problems with some movements.’

German teams are already preparing for the new campaign, which starts on September 18. Dortmund’s preparations have been hampered after discovering that Reus will not be able to get himself fit over pre-season.

Marina Granovskaia looks for weaknesses in Bayer Leverkusen director. She is accused of ‘ESPIONAGE’ in Germany to drive down Kai Havertz’s £90m price tag.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has sensationally been accused of espionage after reportedly asking her network of agents to find potential weaknesses in Bayer Leverkusen’s hierarchy as she tries to bring down the cost of signing Kai Havertz.

The Blues are desperate to sign the 21-year-old attacking midfielder and add him to a new-look attack that will include Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech next season.

But Leverkusen are holding out for £90million for Havertz, whereas Chelsea are hoping to bring down the financial outlay to around £70m.

According to German outlet BILD, Granovskaia is trying to discover any potential flaws within the Leverkusen negotiating team in order to make the deal better for the Blues.

It is claimed Granovskaia has asked ‘several German player consultants’ about information on Rudi Voller and Fernando Carro, who will be at the forefront of negotiations for the Bundesliga side.

Granovskaia has a reputation for her fierce negotiating skills, proven by the way she handled Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid last summer.

Quique Setien must win Champions League to stay in Barcelona job. Lionel Messi and Co look to salvage their dismal season with European glory.

Only Champions League success will save Barcelona boss Quique Setien from being sacked this season, according to reports in Spain.

Sport claim Setien is aware he is in a precarious position after Barca missed out on the LaLiga title, finishing five points behind rivals Real Madrid.

The 61-year-old coach was heavily criticised after the 2-1 defeat by 10-man Osasuna which allowed Los Blancos to clinch their first title since 2017, but he has been given one last chance to make amends in the European Cup.

Setien replaced Ernesto Valverde in January after an unsatisfactory start to the season, but his appointment was not embraced by Barca players.

Setien’s position appeared untenable after the sporting lockdown as Barca stars appeared to pay no attention to his team talks during mid-game water breaks.

The manager is under contract until 2022, however the Spanish outlet suggests his tenure could be cut short during club elections in 2021.

Moreover, the board of directors could take the decision to sack Setien this summer unless he can guide the club to their sixth European Cup win.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund call off Newcastle United takeover

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund call off Newcastle United takeover. The end of the takeover bid leaves the club still in the hands of Mike Ashley.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers have withdrawn from the process to buy Newcastle, Sky Sports News can exclusively reveal.

Papers regarding the proposed takeover were lodged with the Premier League in April and were still being scrutinised.

Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund (PIF) had been set to take an 80 per cent stake in the Premier League club under the terms of the deal, which worth just over £300m.

But the Investment Group have now decided to end their interest. They cite the worldwide uncertainty due to coronavirus pandemic and the ‘prolonged process’.

The end of the takeover bid leaves the North East club still in the hands of businessman Mike Ashley, who has long faced protests and opposition from the fans.

A statement read: “We have come to the decision to withdraw our interest in acquiring Newcastle United Football Club.”

“We do so with regret. We were excited and fully committed to invest in the great city of Newcastle. And we believe we could have returned the club to the position of its history, tradition and fans’ merit.”

“Unfortunately, the prolonged process under the current circumstances coupled with global uncertainty has rendered the potential investment no longer commercially viable.”

“To that end, we feel a responsibility to the fans to explain the lack of alternatives from an investment perspective.”

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba offers himself to Barcelona once again

Bayern Munich's David Alaba offers himself to Barcelona once again

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba offers himself to Barcelona once again. The Austrian has been a Barça target for a number of years.

There’s a fluid relationship between Barcelona and David Alaba’s camp. Blaugrana have tried to sign him in each of the last two seasons without reaching an agreement with Bayern Munich.

Alaba, 28, is putting the squeeze on Bayern over a contract renewal. His intention is to experience something new and it’s unlikely there’s an agreement over an extension.

according to Sport, the Austrian international has offered himself to Barça again, a club he would like to play for before his career ends.

Barça are looking at it but an operation seems unlikely this summer, although they would be keen if he leaves for free in 2021.

Sport reports Barça have long been keen on signing Alaba. The club feel he would adapt perfectly to their style and he can play three positions: centre-back, left-back and midfield.

Talks over a new deal have stalled. Alaba’s new agent, Pini Zahai, has asked for 20 million euros to renew, given only money would keep him in Munich now.

Alaba wants a new challenge and is open to dropping that fee at other clubs. His father has had direct contact with Barça, who are up to date on the negotiations.
