Brendan Rodgers says Philippe Coutinho transfer help Liverpool win title. Big-money sale of the Brazilian allowed the Reds to build their squad.
Rodgers has traced Liverpool’s recent glut of silverware back to the £142million sale of Philippe Coutinho. He snapped up Brazilian Coutinho for a bargain £8.5m in January 2013 from Inter Milan when he was boss of the club.
Jurgen Klopp sold the midfielder five years later to Barcelona for mega money.
Rodgers reckons Klopp’s investment in defender Virgil van Dijk for £75m in January 2018 plus keeper Alisson for £66m and midfielder Fabinho for £40m, both in July 2018, has really paid off.
He said he was delighted to see his old club, owned by US firm FSG since 2010, end their 30-year wait for the title.
“The money they gained from Philippe has enabled them to buy Van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho – three players who have transformed the team.”
“They have been consistently the best team. And to get the title after such a long wait, I am delighted for all the supporters.”
“It is very fitting as they have been brilliant this year. They have looked like a machine. The team have so much quality with professional players who play at the highest level.”
